When Silence Speaks…

Are you friends with your thoughts…the ones that ‘just come out of nowhere to you’, and, mildly piqued, you have them come in and sit a spell? I’m talking about the intriguing thoughts that make you reflect on your own perspective and perception of life. I think they’re delicious for lack of a better word. Opening the possibility for endless pondering, the moments we spend together with our thoughts offer us the chance to work on figuring out who we are, what we want out of life and who we are willing to become with all the choices we are presented with. In getting to know yourself better, the best part of all is that you might discover you actually find yourself worth liking…even loving. Silence is golden and the sounds of silence speak louder than words. Who would have thought it?!

People living in the past enjoyed an abundance of natural heavenly light and comfortable darkness, without streetlights, headlights, and the light pollution found in all our cities across the world. They also enjoyed a natural silence with few man-made sounds interrupting their days and especially their nights. In earlier times people experienced solitude in ways we cannot imagine in our crowded and busy world. Do you have any personal quiet time? It is important to be still, listen to, and follow the spirit. Everyone needs time to meditate and contemplate.

Everywhere in nature we are taught the lessons of patience and waiting. We want things a long time before we get them. And the fact that we want them a long time makes them all the more precious when they come. Joseph F. Smith

We all need time to ask ourselves questions in our quest for peace, knowledge and understanding. We are often so busy and the world is so loud that it is difficult to hear the heavenly words, “be still, and know that I am God.”

“There seems to be little evidence that the Creator of the universe was ever in a hurry. Everywhere on this bounteous and beautiful earth, and out into the farthest reaches of the firmament, there is evidence of patient purpose and planning and working and waiting.”

Richard L. Evans

A certain vision came to mind one day of holding gossamer-like silk threads being spun from a small tightly wound cocoon . Every strand was lighter than a cobweb. They seemed magical as they almost floated in the air on the barest whisper of a breeze. In the moment, the thought came to me that listening to and for the Spirit of the Lord is quite a similar experience. Some call the Spirit the ‘still small voice’… for some, it’s influence is as a small thread of a thought, or particular idea. Even a direction to follow thru on, or an inclination to give heed to something important. It’s lilting presence is as the silk threads, coming ever so softly to inspire, to guide, and to bring us what only the Spirit can bring to bless our lives if only we learn to recognize it’s voice and heed it’s counsel. So briefly the transient thoughts come in to our minds and our hearts bearing personal witness of our loving Father’s enduring desire to help us experience communicating with the Him. As we sense the inspiration and give heed to it, and learn to perceive it’s comforting presence, we learn that obeying the Spirit of the Lord is a gift of gifts and a wonderful blessing. Act on the thoughts and impressions that come to you. Make time for contemplating and acknowledge His wanting to communicate with you. Didn’t he say He would always be with us, guide and protect us? Listen, listen, to the still small voice so that your heart can reply, “…Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth.”

He lives. He created the earth you are living on. He has always cared about you. When He died he made it possible for you to return to live again when you die. Isn’t knowing that enough to make you ponder, ask questions and find him? Trust him. You can hardly imagine the answers he has for you.
